Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in DeWitt, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city across the United States to conduct these tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These tests can identify the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in drug screening methods. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists often favor them over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are essential for workplaces with zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and individuals under supervision. The significant advantage lies in its extended detection window, which can track drug use up to 90 days, is collected through observed methods, and is nearly cheat-proof. Nevertheless, for determining drug use within the previous five days, urine testing remains unrivaled.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have become recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to send off.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG tests, additional panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process where a sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs. While Screening offers a cost-effective means of dismissing drug presence in many samples, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is collected from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this stage, hair undergoes drug extraction at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screenings occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, compared to shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's notably hard to deceive a hair drug test, thus yielding more precise results.
  • Historical usage evidence: It can reveal drug use trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
