In East Lansing, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we operate testing centers across various cities nationwide, including your locality. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has notably shifted towards hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine samples. Zero-tolerance employers and probationary bodies utilize hair testing due to its ability to detect drug usage over an extended period, usually up to 90 days, with minimal risk of tampering. However, for detecting very recent drug use, the urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for the history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers into the fibers as the hair strand grows. Collecting hair near the scalp can potentially yield a detection period of nearly three months for alcohol and drug intake. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5-inch hair consisting of around 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for examination and confirmation. For tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is recommended. It is advisable to weigh this sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used instead. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other varieties (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation process for drug tests is comprised of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and mailed, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for the presence of abusive substances. Despite being an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screening result must be validated to be used judicially. Samples that test positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair but at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive detected during screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are thoroughly washed before validation as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and follows accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use over a span of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine testing, which offers a shorter detection period.
  • Low possibility of tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, enhancing the accuracy of findings.
  • Highlights usage trends: This method can illustrate a record of drug intake over time, as opposed to simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Detectability in hair requires roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test primarily examines the hair strand, not the follicle itself beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In East Lansing, MI, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can track long-term substance use, providing a clearer history over numerous months. This broad overview is invaluable for employers and legal entities enforcing strict no-drug policies, offering a dependable and verifiable testing method.

A key advantage of hair testing is its resistance to manipulation. Urine samples can be easily adulterated, leading to inaccurate results. However, hair tests provide a nearly foolproof detection process, solidifying their position as the favored testing option in East Lansing, MI. The reliability of these tests ensures that results remain unquestionable.

Extended Detection Window

In East Lansing, MI, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, highlighting substance use histories up to 90 days. This protracted timeframe surpasses traditional urine testing, providing a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance consumption patterns. Employers gain insight into consistent usage, not merely recent infractions.

This extended detection capability is particularly advantageous for organizations striving for a drug-free environment. By identifying patterns of repeated use, hair follicle tests help employers make informed decisions. In East Lansing, this approach ensures that businesses maintain a safe and compliant workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in East Lansing, MI, provides unparalleled reliability by reducing tampering risks. Unlike urine samples, which can be contaminated or manipulated, hair samples are arduous to alter. This characteristic ensures the authenticity and trustworthiness of the test results.

For East Lansing businesses and authorities, this means dependable results that allow informed decision-making. Tackling sample adulteration head-on, hair tests mitigate the chances of deceptive outcomes, offering peace of mind that results reflect accurate substance use data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
