Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Decatur, Illinois. Whether it's a drug or alcohol test you're seeking, our expertise is in hair testing, with nationwide centers ready to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically needed, with possible use of body hair. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized factors.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more common method for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are choosing this over urine testing. These tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation due to their extended detection capabilities—up to 90 days—ensuring results that are difficult to manipulate. Still, urine tests remain the gold standard for recent use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive historical account of alcohol and other drugs as biomarkers are encapsulated within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reflect up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we're specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage across most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal proceedings. Any samples that indicate a positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging procedures to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and conformity with ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides chronological data: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over an interval, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
