Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Oreana, IL. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities across all cities nationwide for conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle drug assessments. Many businesses, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals prioritize hair testing over standard urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is a longer drug use detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection that's nearly impossible to tamper with, unlike urine tests, which are more accurate for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, this can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh samples on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, the same quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substances of abuse. It serves as a cost-effective measure to exclude drugs in most samples; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive require a secondary confirmation process.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The entirety of the lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is quite challenging to manipulate hair drug tests, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Yields historical insights: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
