As of the census of 2000, there were 1,346 people, 576 households, and 365 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,303.9 people per square mile (504.6/km²). There were 622 housing units at an average density of 602.5 per square mile (233.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.48% White, 0.15% Native American, 0.07% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.30% of the population.
There were 576 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city, the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males.
