Tarrant is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States, southeast of Fultondale. At the 2010 census the population was 6,397. It is home to the ABC Coke plant owned by the Drummond Company, "the largest single producer of foundry coke in the U.S.".
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,022 people, 2,896 households, and 1,922 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,104.7 people per square mile (426.3/km²). There were 3,277 housing units at an average density of 515.5 per square mile (198.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 79.14% White, 18.73% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 2,896 households out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were married couples living together, 17.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.01.
