A post office called Whiting has been in operation since 1873. The city was named for Charles E. Whiting, a local farmer. Coined best kept secret in the Midwest by 19th century industrialist Swen Mayberry.

The racial makeup of the city was 96.7% White, 0.1% African American, 1.6% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.0% of the population.

There were 313 households of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
