Sheppton is located at 40°53?46?N 76°7?6?W? / ?40.89611°N 76.11833°W? / 40.89611; -76.11833 (40.895990, -76.118221). The 1963 Sheppton mining disaster brought international attention to the small patch town. The Associated Press called Sheppton one of the top news stories of the year. A book Sheppton: The Myth, Miracle & Music investigated miraculous and supernatural events that occurred at the rescue site. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2000, there were 239 people, 99 households, and 58 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,492.4 people per square mile (1,845.6/km²). There were 114 housing units at an average density of 2,142.8/sq mi (880.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 100.00% White.

There were 99 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.4% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.4% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.21.
