Hodgdon was incorporated in 1821. It was named for John Hodgdon, an early proprietor originally from Ware, New Hampshire. The town was settled by many Irish immigrants who fell victim of the Great Famine of Ireland from 1845 to 1852. Hodgdon is located on the Canadian border in Southern Aroostook County and is known for its scenic views and vast farmland. A substantial portion of the Lt. Gordon Manuel Wildlife Management Area, on the South Branch Meduxnekeag River, lies in the southwestern portion of the town in the Hodgdon Mills Village.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.97 square miles (103.52 km2), of which 39.82 square miles (103.13 km2) is land and 0.15 square miles (0.39 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,309 people, 515 households, and 372 families residing in the town. The population density was 32.9 inhabitants per square mile (12.7/km2). There were 568 housing units at an average density of 14.3 per square mile (5.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.7% White, 0.1% African American, 1.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.2% of the population.
