Fredericksburg was incorporated on December 18, 1894. The city was named after Frederick Padden, a local settler who platted the village in 1856. In the late 1800s, Dr. William S. Pitts, a local physician and composer who wrote The Church in the Wildwood, served as mayor of the town.

As of the census of 2010, there were 931 people, 427 households, and 260 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,082.6 inhabitants per square mile (418.0/km2). There were 462 housing units at an average density of 537.2 per square mile (207.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.1% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 2.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.4% of the population.

There were 427 households of which 23.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 39.1% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.77.
