Founded in 1835 by land speculator John Atchison, Belmont was the original capital of the Wisconsin Territory, and the original territorial capitol building is preserved a few miles northwest of the village at First Capitol Historic Site. The village is adjacent to the Town of Belmont.

As of the census of 2010, there were 986 people, 439 households, and 279 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,120.5 inhabitants per square mile (432.6/km2). There were 454 housing units at an average density of 515.9 per square mile (199.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.8% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races.
