Bennington was originally called Bunz Town, and under the latter name was founded in the 1880s when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad was extended to that point. The present name is after the town of Bennington, Vermont.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.84 square miles (2.18 km2), of which, 0.83 square miles (2.15 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,458 people, 556 households, and 388 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,756.6 inhabitants per square mile (678.2/km2). There were 626 housing units at an average density of 754.2 per square mile (291.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.9% White, 0.8% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 1.0% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.
