In 1846, Talbotton was the site of the first session of the newly created Georgia Supreme Court (for several decades, Georgia had chosen to do without such a judicial body). The court was soon relocated to the state capital.[citation needed]

Talbotton may be best known in history as the place where the immigrant Straus family got their start in retail sales in the 19th century. In 1896, the family acquired R. H. Macy & Co. in New York.
