Poyen is located in western Grant County at 34°19?24?N 92°38?26?W? / ?34.32333°N 92.64056°W? / 34.32333; -92.64056 (34.323459, -92.640487). U.S. Route 270 passes through the center of town, leading east 14 miles (23 km) to Sheridan, the county seat, and west 10 miles (16 km) to Malvern.

As of the census of 2000, there were 272 people, 106 households, and 82 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,105.6 inhabitants per square mile (420.1/km²). There were 112 housing units at an average density of 455.2 per square mile (173.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.23% White, 1.84% Black or African American, 0.74% Native American, 1.47% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 106 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
