After heaing a sermon by 19th-century preacher Samuel Porter Jones, the town adopted the name "Newborn", after the concept of born again in Evangelical Christianity. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Newborn as a town in 1894.

As of the census of 2000, there were 520 people, 181 households, and 148 families residing in the town. The population density was 325.6 people per square mile (125.5/km²). There were 187 housing units at an average density of 117.1 per square mile (45.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 71.35% White, 25.58% African American, 0.96% Native American, 1.35% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.88% of the population.

There were 181 households out of which 42.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 18.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% were non-families. 16.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
