Located on the Menominee Indian Reservation, it had a population of 1,262 at the 2010 census. Keshena was named for an Indian chief; the Menominee name is Kes?qnaeh which means "Swift Flying".

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.5 square miles (21.9 km²), of which 99.88% is land and 0.12% is water.
