On Wednesday, April 27, 2011, a moderate tornado with sustained winds of 90-100 mph struck the communities of Edom and Ben Wheeler Texas. Three structures were destroyed and over one hundred structures were damaged.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km²), of which, 4.2 square miles (10.7 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.48%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 322 people, 126 households, and 86 families residing in the city. The population density was 77.6 people per square mile (30.0/km²). There were 141 housing units at an average density of 34.0 per square mile (13.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.03% White, 0.31% Native American, 3.73% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.42% of the population.
