Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Anchorage, Alaska. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Our expertise is in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body are needed. Hair analysis can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Employers, insisting on zero-tolerance, courts, and probationary individuals rely on hair tests. The key advantage is an extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, ensuring collection is observed and tamper-proof, unlike urine tests, which are best for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged chronicle of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. Hair collected near the scalp can furnish a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs due to its properties. Hair sampling is straightforward to execute, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG levels, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen weighing. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This phase involves validating that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry overlooked by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to become permissible in court. Samples tentatively positive in Screening indeed require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations significantly lower than with other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug examinations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that present a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to undermine a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical information: A hair drug test can depict a trajectory of drug consumption over time, not simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: In general, hair drug tests entail higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
