Process Overview
The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the specimen, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for ruling out usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.
If a sample shows signs of positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most challenging to execute.
Confirmation of any positive screening findings is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.
