Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Friendship, Wisconsin. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities located nationwide to carry out these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, or body, is generally needed. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Those with strict no-drug policies, courts, and people on probation value hair tests. The key advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions, making evasion almost impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair delivers a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 strands of hair (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab's system. This process confirms the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary and rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in judicial proceedings. Samples that initially test positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample presumptively tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are removed from the hair at a concentration much lower than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from the screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can uncover drug usage for as long as 90 days, surpassing urine tests that have a more limited detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical trends: This test conveys a drug usage pattern over a period, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Friendship, WI, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests by offering greater detection accuracy and reliability. They detect drug use from a much larger timeframe than urine tests. This gives them a clear edge, especially for employers who require a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history. Additionally, hair tests minimize the risk of sample tampering, offering more reliable results.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Friendship, WI, prefer hair follicle testing due to its extended detection window. Unlike other tests, it provides insights into drug use covering up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
