Serving Easton, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing is your comprehensive solution for hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in these tests nationwide, including every city, we conduct hair and alcohol testing at various centers. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body is typically required. Our tests can screen for multiple drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to your specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a reliable method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer these over urine tests, especially where a strict non-drug policy is in place. The advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection window, which can reach 90 days, all while being collected under direct supervision, making tampering unlikely. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record for alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is hassle-free.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) positioned closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp isn't available, an equivalent measure of hair from the body can be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically denotes hair from the scalp, whereas "body hair" includes other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result is divided into four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any supplementary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. Although it offers a cost-effective approach to detect the absence of drugs in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample turn out to be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this step, drugs are derived from hair in far lesser concentrations than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid analysis, underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed to confirm any positive screening results. Presumptive positive cases undergo a washing process before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory operation, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under the supervision of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenges in deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is significantly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Reflects historical usage: It portrays a usage trend over a considerable duration, beyond mere recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
