Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Brownsville, Wisconsin. Should you require testing for substances or alcohol, our focus is on hair analysis, with ample facilities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is generally needed. These assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate specific testing requirements.

Lately, drug testing methodologies have increasingly favored hair follicle assessments. Compared to a urine test, many employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts prefer hair tests. Hair testing is utilized by zero-tolerance employers, court systems, and individuals under probation. The main advantage is the extended detection of drug usage, up to 90 days, ensuring rigorous observation and minimizing tamper chances. However, for recent usage within five days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collecting hair near the scalp allows for a detection timeframe of roughly 3 months. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 strands (approximate diameter of a #2 pencil), taken near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Practical Stages

The primary stages in lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves preliminary sample integration into lab systems. This step assures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves data entry not covered by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial, rapid assessment for drug abuse indicators. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples presumptively positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Extraction. In this processing phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screenings the most complex to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process falls under the oversight of both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can discover drug use over a 90-day span, as opposed to urine tests, which have shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly tough to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: It shows a timeline of drug usage rather than only recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
