In Campbellsport, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise is hair testing, and our national network of centers is ready to assist. Typically, 1.5-2 inches of hair from your scalp or body are required. Hair testing options can include analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for substance screening. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer it over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers often choose hair tests. Main advantages include a longer detection window of up to 90 days, a supervised collection process, and almost unbeatable counteraction, yet for recent drug usage, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a lengthy timeline of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on jeweler's scales. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any extra data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive Screening needs further Confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as applicable. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
