Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Kent, Washington. At Accredited Drug Testing, we specialize in hair testing, with centers in cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test if you require a drug or alcohol analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to other needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle assessments. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer this over standard urine testing. Hair drug tests support zero-tolerance policies and are essential for courts and those on probation. The key advantage lies in its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and minimal chance of tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can provide an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equal to the size of a #2 pencil), located closest to the scalp, provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure specimen weight. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drug abuse. Though Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in numerous samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for use in legal settings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most intricate methods to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: It can illustrate a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Limited in detecting recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being named "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kent, WA, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair tests provide enhanced accuracy and reliability in detecting substance use from as far back as 90 days. Unlike urine testing, hair analysis captures a broad spectrum and history of drug use, making it the preferred choice for employers maintaining stringent drug-free policies. The undeniable precision in detection ensures greater security in understanding employee substance history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Kent, WA provides an extended detection window that far exceeds traditional tests. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, this method offers employers a profound insight into individuals' substance usage over time. This longer timeframe facilitates a comprehensive analysis of a person's drug history, crucial for making sound hiring and management choices, ensuring workplace safety and integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle tests in Kent, WA significantly reduces tampering risk compared to other methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
