Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fife, Washington. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, we are experts in hair testing with testing sites available across cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Usually, hair from the crown of the head or body is used, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches in length. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair testing needs.

In the past years, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly used for drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers often mandate hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain precise for detecting recent drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the lengthening hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month period for the detection of drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is nonexistent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This entails confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method for excluding drug usage for most samples, a positive screen warrants confirmation to be allowable in legal settings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening need secondary validation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than with other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can discover drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: It's quite challenging to cheat a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage trends: It facilitates insight into drug use patterns over an extended timeline, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • High cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the amount of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself targets the hair strand and not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
