In Pratts, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for screening. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now favor it over urine tests. This test helps enforce zero-tolerance drug policies and is used by courts and probation officers. Its main merit is its extended detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days, secured in an observed collection, making it hard to falsify. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and various drugs. Hair sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a matching amount of body hair may be used instead. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drug substances. Though Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be validated to be legally acceptable. Any samples with an initial positive Screening outcome will necessitate further confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, the drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, establishing hair drug testing as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with positive preliminary results are washed prior to confirmation as requisite. The comprehensive lab processing, from Accessioning to Confirmation, follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is significantly difficult, thereby ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It require approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
