Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Madison Heights, Virginia. If you require a hair analysis for drug or alcohol content, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair tests and offers nationwide testing sites that can administer this service. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are necessary. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

Lately, hair follicle drug assessments have become increasingly popular in drug testing protocols. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over conventional urine testing. These tests benefit employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationees. The key advantage of hair testing is its extensive 90-day detection timeline, conducted under observation to ensure accuracy, making it hard to falsify. Yet, for identifying substance use within the past five days, urine analyses remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective approach for detecting substance and alcohol usage. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When samples are collected near the scalp, they can offer a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drug presence. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section with about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for evaluation and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair might be taken. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses every other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The pivotal steps in processing a drug test result in the lab encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing within a lab’s framework. This step verifies whether the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not conducted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage across most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screen findings is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before verification if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter period of detection.
  • Reduced likelihood of deception: Deceiving a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are often more pricey than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as “hair follicle tests,” the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Madison Heights, VA
Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior accuracy. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests reveal a longer history, making them more reliable for establishing patterns. Their ability to uncover substance use over time allows for a more comprehensive analysis, advantageous in various professional and legal contexts.

Urine tests can miss sporadic use or recent habits, whereas hair tests capture extensive drug histories. This benefit makes hair testing invaluable for employers needing rigorous substance use insights.
Additionally, the observed sample collection process of hair testing ensures further reliability over urine testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
