Accredited Drug Testing provides all-encompassing hair follicle drug testing services in Temple, Texas. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with facilities located nationwide to assist. You'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body in most scenarios. Hair samples can be scrutinized for substances, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for substance testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals under probation frequently utilize them. Key advantages include an expanded drug use detection period of up to 90 days, with observed collection minimizing tampering, but urine tests remain optimal for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It’s easy to collect hair, quite challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result are: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially inputting a sample into a lab’s system. This stage includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional entries not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drugs for most samples, but a positive test in Screening must be validated to be accepted legally. Any samples indicating positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample indicates positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is then taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating positive are washed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: It’s extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: Capable of indicating a pattern of drug use over a period, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the hair follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Temple, TX, hair follicle tests offer a clear advantage over traditional urine tests. They boast superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are limited to a short detection window, hair tests can reveal substance use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
