Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Belton, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and has facilities in all Nationwide cities capable of performing this test. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body in most scenarios. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing variations.

In recent times, the implementation of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug assessment routines. Numerous employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug testing over the customary urine test. Hair follicle drug screening is preferred by companies adhering to strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and individuals under probation. Its key advantage is a substantially extended drug detection window, typically reaching up to 90 days, executed in an observed collection method, making it nearly infallible against tampering. Nevertheless, for drug usage screenings within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now acknowledged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, a proportionate amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Synopsis

The procedure in the laboratory processing of a drug test includes four central steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid check for drug abuse. While economical, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this step, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies.

Post-screening positive results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory chain, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical information: It can chart drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
