Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Spring Branch, Texas. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With testing facilities nationwide, including all cities, we ensure access. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is required, but body hair can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

Recently, more drug testing methods have integrated hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial courts, and substance abuse experts often favor hair tests over urine tests. This approach is prioritized by employers with strict drug-use policies, the judiciary, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, with observed collection, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a retrospective record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to alter, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses over 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to all other varieties (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure for laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory's system. This process encompasses checking that the sample was sealed and transported appropriately, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptively positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other approaches (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Positive Screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a usage pattern over time instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Spring Branch, TX, hair follicle testing emerges as a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. Its ability to detect drug use over months provides employers with a broader understanding of an individual’s substance history.
The reduced window for manipulation in hair tests ensures more dependable outcomes, making it a preferred choice for those seeking accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
