Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Liberty, Texas. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and our centers are located in every city nationwide, capable of administering hair tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed on the crown of the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for screening drug use. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now request a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug use policies, the judiciary, and those on probation. Their key advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection method that is almost impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become regarded as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It provides an extended record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, it offers up to roughly a 3-month detection window for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When specifying head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This process involves checking that the sample has been sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry that an electronic chain of custody system did not provide.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be admissible in legal contexts. Any samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a substantially reduced concentration compared to other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure, encompassing Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
