Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dayton, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist with centers scattered across all major cities in the nation to conduct a hair test. Generally, you should possess around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or from your body. These hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent choice for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer these over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and probation services, commonly employ hair follicle drug testing. Its chief advantage lies in its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days. It is conducted through an observed collection process and is extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a drug and alcohol detection timeline of up to three months. It's easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp weighs about 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirming results. For EtG, extended panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not already included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is utilized from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair tests identify drug use over a 90-day period, offering a broader window than urine tests.
  • Challenging to tamper: The reliability of hair drug tests is higher as test manipulation is difficult.
  • Displays usage history: It reveals drug use patterns over time rather than only capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect immediate use: Drugs become apparent in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing strategies.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual's hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite common references as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Dayton, TX, offers superior detection efficiency compared to traditional urine tests. While urine tests serve well for recent substance use detection, hair follicle tests uncover drug use over a longer period, eliminating the potential of sample dilution or adulteration, thus providing more reliable results.

Extended Detection Window

For employers in Dayton, TX, hair follicle testing provides critical insights with an extended detection window. Covering up to 90 days, it offers a thorough review of an individual's drug use history, equipping employers with comprehensive data to make informed decisions about prospective or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
