Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Hondo, Texas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities available in every city across the Nation to conduct such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or other body parts is necessary. Hair evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have been increasingly utilized for substance screening. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse specialists now often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. These tests support zero-tolerance drug policies, serving employers, courts, and probationers. They provide an extended detection window of up to 90 days, demanding observed sample collection, making them hard to falsify. Nevertheless, for identifying use within the past 5 days, urine tests are still the superior option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a longer-term overview of substance use by preserving biomarkers in the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to about three months for both alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample accurately. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair should be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation as its four primary phases.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check to identify potential drug use. Though it provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in many samples, a positive screening result must be verified to be accepted in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for further Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those seen in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

The Confirmation step for any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have a detection window of up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: It can show drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
