Process Overview

For samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug analysis is notably intricate.
Confirmation of any affirmative screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidance and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed,and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
