Certified Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair analysis for substance detection in Alvin, Texas. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol screen, Certified Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with facilities across the nation that can conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used for testing. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has increasingly been included in substance detection protocols. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer it over traditional urine testing. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, along with courts and probation offices, frequently employ hair testing. The key advantage of this method is its extended detection window for substance use, which can last up to 90 days, involves monitored sample collection, and is virtually impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent usage within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most accurate process.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances. When gathered near the scalp, hair delivers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Measuring the sample weight using a jeweler's scale is recommended. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be acquired. References to head hair specifically target scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair variations (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing comprises four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample intake into a lab’s system. This stage includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry that the electronic chain of custody system might not encompass.

Screening provides an initial, expedited check for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Every presumptively positive Screening sample requires a subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation observes both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests discern drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays usage patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to trace recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days post-consumption to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Alvin, TX

When it comes to accuracy and dependability, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests. This is largely due to its ability to uncover a longer history of drug use, offering a more comprehensive substance profile. As such, it provides a clearer picture of a person's habits, hence delivering superior assurance for employers and officials who prioritize precise testing mechanisms over conventional methods.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Alvin, TX

The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is its impressive detection range, which can extend up to 90 days. This expanded window allows employers to scrutinize a person's substance use more comprehensively than traditional tests. By examining a longer period, these tests offer a broader view of an individual's habits, thus assisting in more informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
