Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in League City, Texas. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we lead the industry in hair testing, with centers available in every city across the nation to conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or other body areas are required. The tests are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice for drug testing in recent years. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair testing over the classic urine tests. Hair follicle tests are commonly used by employers with strict drug use policies, judicial courts, and individuals under probation. They offer the advantage of detecting drug use over an extended timeframe—up to 90 days—utilized through an observed collection, making it almost impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, when detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for substance detection. Hair is easy to acquire, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearly at the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step covers confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be permissible in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptively positive results during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the endorsement to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceptionally tough to falsify a hair drug assessment, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
