Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Addison, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing and numerous testing centers across all major cities Nationwide facilitate the process. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be utilized. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs and alcohol/ETG, among customized testing options.

There has been a notable rise in the implementation of hair follicle drug tests for drug testing in recent times. Organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Such tests are preferred by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation because of their extended drug detection period, which can reach up to 90 days. The tests, conducted under strict observation, are nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still offer the most accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair shaft offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within its strands as it grows. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal a substance use history spanning up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

Getting a 1.5-inch piece of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the dimensions of a #2 pencil) from the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For achieving accurate results in EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the sample. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. Referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair indicates any other type of hair (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The primary steps in the lab procedure for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the beginning stage where a sample is integrated into a lab system. This process consists of ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplemental data entry that an electronic chain of custody system hasn't covered.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment of drugs of abuse. Even though Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to eliminate evidence of drug use across most samples, confirming a positive result is essential for court acceptance. Any samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening need additional verification.

If during the Screening stage a sample is potentially positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug tests being the most challenging to conduct.

Verification of any positive initial findings is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily identified as positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entirety of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and with accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is very arduous, enhancing result reliability.
  • Illustrates past behavior: It shows a trend of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Challenges:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than other testing solutions.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", they examine the hair itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Addison, TX, hair follicle testing stands out as a superior option to traditional urine tests. While urine tests are limited to recent usage, hair tests can capture a longer history of substance use, providing a more accurate and reliable assessment. This comprehensive approach allows for a thorough understanding of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Addison, TX, is a noteworthy advantage. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
