Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Spring Hill, Tennessee. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we specialize in hair analysis, with locations across the nation capable of administering a hair test. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or anywhere on your body. Hair assessments can investigate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, the approach to drug analysis has increasingly involved a hair follicle examination. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring hair evaluations over traditional urine methods. Hair follicle assessments benefit those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and individuals under supervision. A key advantage is a longer drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision, minimizing cheating potential. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying drug use within a recent 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by securing biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection range for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will deliver 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s advantageous to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When alluding to head hair, this pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry required, not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient technique to rule out drug use for the majority of samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations far lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screening being the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variations: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Spring Hill, TN, hair follicle testing is superior to traditional urine testing due to its enhanced detection capability. Unlike urine tests that only cover a short period, hair tests provide a larger window of detection, effectively identifying substance use up to 90 days prior. This method is reliable and offers employers stronger evidence when implementing zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Spring Hill, TN, prefer hair follicle testing for its extended detection window. This effective method traces drug use up to 90 days, offering a detailed representation of an individual's substance use history. This long detection period is invaluable for making informed hiring and retention decisions, ensuring a safer and more responsible workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
