Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Columbia, Tennessee. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, boasting testing facilities in all cities across the nation that can administer a hair test. You need at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body for most cases. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing selections.

In recent times, the method for conducting drug evaluations has increasingly involved hair follicle drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug evaluations are employed by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The chief advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its prolonged detection timeframe for drug use, typically extending up to 90 days, collected through a supervised process, and extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases biomarkers within its growing fibers, offering an extensive record of drug usage. Harvested near the scalp, it can present approximately a 3-month detection range for substances. Its collection is straightforward, it’s challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred quantity for initial tests and verification. For expanded tests such as EtG or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale ensures accurate measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a like amount of body hair can be obtained. When discussing head hair, we specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The results of a drug test undergo four primary laboratory procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample’s initial integration into a lab’s framework. It encompasses checking the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any further details not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening is a swift preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening economically eliminates drug use in most instances, any positive indication necessitates further verification for legal authenticity. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the main sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations lower than alternative techniques like urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug screenings uniquely challenging.

Verification of any positive Screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and follows ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are notably hard to falsify, ensuring reliable outcomes.
  • Patterns of use: It charts a comprehensive picture of substance use over time rather than merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable within hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine drug tests in Columbia, TN, hair testing emerges as superior. Its advantages over traditional urine tests include higher detection accuracy and reliability. This method's extended detection window and reduced susceptibility to tampering make it a preferable choice for employers aiming for comprehensive substance use detection.

Extended Detection Window

One of the major benefits of hair follicle testing in Columbia, TN, is its extended detection window. This method can trace drug use up to 90 days before the test, offering employers a detailed view of an employee's or applicant's history. This broader timespan ensures that decisions are based on a thorough understanding of substance use patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Columbia, TN, hair follicle testing provides a tamper-resistant method that significantly decreases the risk of sample manipulation. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
