Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sharon, Pennsylvania. When you require a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair testing, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is typically necessary. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted as a preferred method for screening substances. Many companies, legal entities, and addiction specialists now favor hair testing over urine tests. Employment settings with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers often utilize these tests. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. Still, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting substances used within the preceding five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair is suitable. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system, encompassing the verification of the sample's seal and proper shipment, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient means to identify drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in judicial settings. Samples yielding presumptive positives during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations lower than seen in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents greater challenges.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is handled through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing prior to confirmation where applicable. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) designation for Hair and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Minimal chance of deception: It is exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: It reveals drug use patterns over an extended timeframe, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to sense recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
