Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services in Orangeville, Pennsylvania. For those needing a specialized hair drug or alcohol test, we provide expert hair testing services across numerous nationwide centers. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is sufficient, including hair from your crown or body. Our tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method in recent years. It is often required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, serving as an alternative to traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and probation officers rely on this method due to its extended detection window—up to 90 days. It ensures accuracy via an observed collection process and is difficult to compromise. However, urine tests remain the best option for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal a detection span of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Note that when "head hair" is mentioned, it pertains to scalp hair alone. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This phase incorporates verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical means to exclude drug consumption in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for it to be valid in court. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a Screening stage sample shows a presumptive positive, additional hair is gathered from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed following the regulations of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can trace drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which typically offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Attempting to cheat on a hair drug examination is exceptionally challenging, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insight: This method can illustrate a trend of drug utilization over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days before drugs can be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuation: Various aspects such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this examination evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
