Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug tests throughout Armagh, Pennsylvania. For hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with centers across all cities Nationwide equipped to handle hair tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Our hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly relied on hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts now often request a hair test rather than urine testing. Hair follicle drug tests benefit those with strict anti-drug policies due to their longer detection window, up to 90 days, and are collection-observed, making deception nearly impossible. Urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use, typically within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair near the scalp can reveal insights into substance use for up to approximately three months. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh samples using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable portion of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This step confirms that the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry not handled by an electronic custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, further confirmation is necessary for legally valid results if initial screens test positive. Presumptive positives during Screening necessitate additional Confirmation.

Samples with presumptive positives in Screening are further processed for Extraction. This stage separates drugs from hair at lower concentrations relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples identified as presumptive positives undergo cleaning before confirmation if needed. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory process adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests provide insight into substance use over up to 90 days, whereas urine tests detect shorter usage periods.
  • High level of accuracy: The difficulty in tampering with hair test samples enhances the reliability of results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It can map out drug usage trends over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection capability: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Increased cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Results may vary due to hair color and differences in hair growth rates among individuals.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
