Proudly serving Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing delivers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing ensures precision. Boasting testing locations across the nation, we can facilitate hair tests, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or other body areas, with the ability to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of standard drug testing practices. A growing number of courts, employers, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests instead of urine tests. With zero-tolerance policies growing in workplaces, hair tests offer employers and probation officials a robust solution. The main advantage is an extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. However, for use detection within five days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture long-term records of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month window for identifying alcohol and drug usage. The collection process for hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, composed of approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It’s suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where the sample enters the laboratory’s system. This phase includes confirming that the sample is sealed and properly sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any added data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out a preliminary inspection for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage for the most part, a positive screening result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be suspected positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are retrieved from hair at significantly minute concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug analysis is considered the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned before undergoing confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can trace drug presence for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection timelines.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thus rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can track a timeline of drug use patterns, rather than just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared with other drug testing procedures.
  • Differing results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", these evaluations actually focus on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine analysis in several facets for Johnstown residents. It provides a broad detection window, outlasting the limited timeframe of urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
