Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Prineville, Oregon. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers across all cities nationwide. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can reveal drug, alcohol/ETG usage, or be customized for other needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening processes. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over the typical urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies for drugs, as well as legal and probationary bodies, rely on these tests. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended period—typically up to 90 days—and their resistance to tampering. Still, urinalysis remains the best option for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can yield a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hairs (approximately equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is optimal. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample in a lab’s system. This entails verifying correct sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is highly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide an overview of drug use across a duration of time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
