Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Madras, Oregon. When hair or alcohol drug tests are needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities present in every city nationwide that can administer these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body can be used. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom hair test options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have shifted more towards using hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are essential for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary, and those on probation. Their key advantage lies in a much longer detection window—up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making it nearly impossible to cheat. For detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the hair's fiber as it grows, hair offers a long-term record of drug and alcohol intake. When sampled near the scalp, it can indicate substance use within a detection period of up to around three months. Hair sampling is easy to perform, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width), taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for analysis and validation. For EtG tests, additional elements, and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. A jeweler’s scale should ideally be used to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent sample of body hair may be used instead. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other kinds such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for obtaining drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the lab’s system. Tasks include verifying the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and undertaking any remaining data entry tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in the majority of cases, confirmation is needed for any positive results to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples shown to be potentially positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates potential positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a markedly lower concentration than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis both the most demanding and complicated to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are rinsed before undergoing confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is consistently reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can indicate substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a much shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty in evasion: The hair drug testing method is notably resistant to cheating, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: These tests can demonstrate a timeline of drug use over an extended period rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs typically take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs compared to other testing options.
  • Variability in test results: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though often dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
