In Moro, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this area and have centers across the Nation that offer hair tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or other body parts for analysis. Hair tests assist in detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specialized hair testing needs.

In recent times, the emphasis on drug testing techniques has increasingly turned to hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with stringent anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary programs. The main advantage is their extended drug detection capability, up to 90 days, observed collection method, and resistance to tampering. However, for drug detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide approximately a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A segment of about 1.5 inches from around 200 strands of hair (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the material is advised. We propose weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system, which involves confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for illicit substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation for court acceptability. All samples that test positive at Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this point, substances are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirming any positive Screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Moro, OR, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests, including superior detection accuracy and reliability. This method can detect drug use over a longer window, typically up to 90 days, surpassing the limited scope of urine tests. Employers find this advantageous for maintaining drug-free environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
