Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Dallas, Oregon. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol exam, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities in cities across the nation ready to conduct such tests. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored hair analysis options.
In the past few years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly incorporated the hair follicle drug analysis. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often mandate hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probation programs frequently utilize hair follicle tests. Key advantages of hair follicle drug testing include an extended detection window for drugs, typically up to 90 days, and a secure observation during collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper. However, for drug use detected within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable method.

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the structure of the hair strand. When cut close to the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.
A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp results in 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).
Process Overview
The core stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning comprises the initial sample processing into the lab's system. This entails confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided electronically via a chain of custody system.
Screening provides an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for judicial acceptance. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening do require further confirmation.
If a sample returns a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.
Confirmation of positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025.

It served as a prominent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, facilitating groundbreaking advancements in hair testing and analysis. In this special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, we aim to showcase the remarkable manuscripts presented at this significant event, shedding light on the latest research and highlighting the future directions in this field.
Novel Analytical Techniques: The Verona meeting witnessed the unveiling of cutting-edge analytical techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for drug testing. Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
