Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Salem, Oregon. For those needing hair or alcohol examination, our expertise focuses on hair assessments, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Analyses can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

Recently, the practice of implementing drug tests more often incorporates a hair follicle examination. This method is increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse consultants over traditional urine tests. Employers with no-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals typically use hair analyses. They provide an extended detection period–up to 90 days–and are collected under observation, making evasion nearly impossible. For recent use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

An ideal sample for analysis and verification involves collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, totaling 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. A jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. It ensures the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples registering presumptively positive in Screening necessitate confirmatory testing.

For presumptive positives at the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are abstracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing presents the most challenging methodology.

Verification of positive screening outcomes ensues through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The holistic laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a limited detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating in hair drug tests is exceedingly difficult, rendering the results more trustworthy.
  • Chronological data provision: They offer an account of drug use trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although often described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle located underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Salem, OR
Hair follicle testing offers a clear advantage over urine tests, especially in terms of detection accuracy. Not only does it provide a much longer retrospective window, but it also boasts superior reliability, eliminating many of the uncertainties that come with urine analysis.

In contrast to urine tests, hair analysis remains unaffected by short-term abstinence, which can often result in false negatives in urine testing. In Salem, OR, the use of hair testing gives companies confidence in maintaining a drug-free environment, as it effectively captures long-term substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
