Accredited Drug Testing presents comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Coos Bay, Oregon. Whether you require tests for drug or alcohol consumption, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in every city across the Nation equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffices. Hair assessments can screen for drugs, ETG, or tailor to specific testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug assessments have grown more common in drug testing approaches. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer these over conventional urine tests. Such tests cater to zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probation individuals. They excel in offering extended detection periods, up to 90 days, with secure, monitored collections, minimizing cheating. However, for the recent 5-day detection, urine tests maintain accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its growing strands, offering an extended overview of alcohol and drug history. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and various drugs. Gathering hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and easy to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for evaluations and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes every other type of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s framework. This process verifies the correct sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial brief assessment for drug misuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screening must be validated to be court-acceptable. Any samples with a preliminary positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug evaluation is the most complex method to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening result takes place via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs become noticeable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally pricier than other types of drug tests.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth variances can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination itself analyzes the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Coos Bay, OR, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests by offering superior detection precision. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair analyses provide a broader detection window, showcasing a more extensive history of substance use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
