Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Charleston, Oregon. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, our company specializes in hair analysis, with testing centers available nationwide across all cities. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in the drug screening process. This method is increasingly chosen by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers favor hair tests for their extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days, and observed collection that makes evasion near impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate choice for detecting substances used within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum sample amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be accessed, a corresponding amount of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory outcome processing of a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not conducted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in legal contexts. All samples that appear positive during Screening demand secondary verification.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methodologies (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers chronological data: It can reveal a trend of drug use spanning a period, not only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
